Prof Miksic, 71, is the first non-Singaporean to win the prize, which was launched in 2014 as part of the SG 50 programme to mark the country’s 50th anniversary. He was chosen by a four-member panel of judges that included chairman of the National University of Singapore’s East Asian Institute Wang Gungwu. He credited the support from sponsors, participants and public for helping to make this year’s Competition successful. This included the National Library Board, Nanyang Girls’ High School and Hwa Chong Institute, as well as SG50 Celebration Fund, Peoples’ Association, and members of the public who donated their family genealogical records.

He also praised the efforts of the judges and the prize committee in reviewing and selecting the winning entries, noting that this was not an easy task. He added that it was especially heartening to see so many younger people getting involved in the Competition. He said he was particularly impressed by the story of 74 year old Mr Chui Seng Wah, who won a Special Mention for his entry on his tailoring business and his family history. Mr Chui, who is the president of the Singapore Tailoring Association, spent three years compiling his entry, digging into family albums and documents.

Prof Kishore Mahbubani, senior advisor (university and global relations), NUS, said that plans are in place to expand the types of works that can qualify for the sgp prize. He gave the example of the film 12 Years a Slave, saying that there are times when history can be told more effectively through fiction and other mediums.

The sgp prize is one of several awards that have been set up to encourage young people to take an active interest in their academic studies and careers. The NUS SGP also aims to encourage students to pursue research and innovation. Several companies that have received the prize have developed technology to improve food safety, reduce waste, and protect biodiversity. Other winners include a lithium battery recycler, a platform to end illegal fishing, and an urban forest project that will restore Singapore’s natural landscape. The five companies will receive PS1 million in cash and other support to scale up their solutions. They were announced at an event in Singapore hosted by Prince William and attended by actors Cate Blanchett, Donnie Yen, Lana Condor, and Nomzamo Mbatha, as well as NGO founders Stella McCartney, British fashion designer Mary Portas, and World Trade Organization chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
