The winner of the 2023 Hang Lung Mathematics Awards, Kyan Cheung Ka-Hin and Ethan SOH Jon-Yi from Harrow International School Hong Kong, won the gold prize for their research report titled “On the Properties of the Semigroup Generated by the RL Fractional Integral.” They were among over 70 teams from close to 50 secondary schools in participating this year. Under the supervision of teachers, each team decided on a mathematics topic and designed and conducted research. The teams then submitted their research reports for evaluation by a panel of experts and educators.
Hong Kong’s scientific researchers and innovators continue to make great strides in various disciplines. They are not only enhancing the competitiveness of Hong Kong’s science and technology industry, but also contributing to the development of global technologies, thus creating economic benefits for society.
This year, a total of 10 scientific research projects were awarded the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize (the PRIZE), hosted by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation and title sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. The PRIZE is designed to reward outstanding scientists and research teams in Hong Kong or research-related institutions set up by Hong Kong higher education institutions and located within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area for their pioneering efforts in transforming research discoveries into practical applications.
In addition to the PRIZE, BOCHK also offers a number of Special Awards for a range of specific topics, including biomedicine and artificial intelligence. For instance, a team from HKUST won the PRIZE for Invention and Innovation for their innovative study on therapeutic targets for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The findings of this project could lead to new therapies that are less invasive and more effective than current treatments.
It’s inspiring to see Hong Kong’s scientific community gaining a worldwide reputation for their outstanding achievements and contributions to mankind. This year’s winners are a testament to Hong Kong’s innate strength and unique position as an innovation hub. Their success serves as an inspiration for all young scholars in the city to persist in innovative exploration, establish themselves here, serve the nation and contribute to the world.
The LUI Che Woo Prize – Prize for Sustainability (the LUI Prize) was established in 2024 as an annual award to honour the accomplishments of outstanding individuals or groups from around the world who have made significant contributions to environmental protection, scientific research and technological innovation. The LUI Prize aims to encourage scientific researchers and innovators in Hong Kong to persist in innovative exploration, establish themselves in Hong Kong, serve the nation and contribute to the world by recognizing their pioneering efforts and contribution for the betterment of humanity. The prestigious accolade is one of the most coveted prizes in Asia and the world, with a first-prize amount of up to HK$100 million.
