Many of these pools are fenced, with lanes for swimmers and lifeguards on duty. They are popular with locals and tourists, who enjoy the chance to cool off in the ocean in summer and escape the icy blast of winter. In addition, they are ideal for children and people who have a fear of open water.
In the northern suburbs, you can swim at Bondi Icebergs Pool or Coogee Bay Baths. The latter were established by Henry Alexander Wylie, a champion long-distance and underwater swimmer in 1907. The pools are set in cliffs overlooking Wedding Cake Island and have raised decking built into them, as well as stunning ocean views. Coogee is also home to McIver’s Ladies Baths, the only ocean pool in Australia that was designed exclusively for women and girls.
However, despite their popularity and beauty, they have some drawbacks. They are not heated, and the water temperature can fluctuate between 12 degrees Celsius in winter and 24 degrees Celsius in summer. The pools can also be crowded, and people often leave trash on the beach or in the water. Moreover, some ocean pools are endangered by jellyfish and sharks. In 2022, a 2.4-metre whale carcass was found at Bilgola’s sea pool, and there are concerns that the influx of marine creatures could damage the pool’s clean concrete walls.
It’s a lesson other councils are hoping to avoid with their own ocean pools. North Sydney mayor Zoe Baker has said she is determined to ensure the costly vanity project at the north end of the city’s iconic beach is not repeated, and other councils are considering charging fashion shows, film production companies and private parties to cover the costs of their upgrades.
