The Basics of Baccarat

Baccarat is one of the most popular casino games in the world. It has become particularly popular in Asia, but it is now gaining more and more popularity in the United States as well. The game is a simple, easy-to-learn card game that has an interesting history and some surprising rules.

Baccarat was originally a game of chance that had its origins in railway travel, although it is now most widely played using the further simplified version called Punto Banco, which originated at the Capri Casino in Havana in the 1950’s. Its name may also be derived from the fact that railways were among the fastest forms of transportation available at the time when the game was invented.

The game is played by placing bets on either the Player hand, the Banker hand, or the tie. Once the bets are placed, a dealer deals two cards to each of the gaming spots on the table. These are then compared to determine the outcome of the hand. A Player win is when the total of the two cards is 9 or closest to 9. A Banker win is when the total is 8 or closer to 8. A tie is a hand that has a total of nine and is the closest to the other player’s hand.

Aside from the Player and Banker bets, many Baccarat games offer a third bet called a Tie. This bet is offered at the same odds as a Banker bet and is based on whether the Player or Banker hands will end up with a total of eight or less. If the Player and Banker hands have the same total, this is called a tie and all bets on both sides are returned.

Besides the three main bets, some Baccarat games feature additional side bets such as Super Six and Pair Bets. These are extra bets that can increase the payouts of the initial bet if the winning hand is a six or a pair of sevens. These bets typically pay out between 12 and 18 times the initial bet amount.

Baccarat is not the most complicated casino game out there, but it does get a little confusing at times. The essential objective is to pick a hand that will total closer to nine than the other players’ hands. The number of points is determined by adding the values of each card in a hand. The ace is worth 1 while the other face cards (tens, jacks, queens and kings) are worth nothing.

When you gamble, it is important to have a plan. Determine how much you are willing to lose and when you have reached that limit, stop playing. Baccarat is a game where you can easily become caught up in the thrill of gambling, so make sure to keep it fun and don’t go overboard.
